I know I'm totally late on the bandwagon with this one (all this stuff is from before 2010) but I have just found out about Charlie White and I think his work is really awesome. It's rare to see a male artist deal with issues of the feminine experience so honestly and without condescension or some kind of caustic undertone.
The first three videos above are part of White's Girl Studies series, and are titled OMG BFF LOL. I believe that you are meant to watch the videos of the girls in their rooms first, and then the video of the two of them in the mall, but I watched the mall animation first and the other two second and found the whole thing still to be incredibly... I don't know. Touching? Anyway, I think White has a clear grasp of what it means to construct tension and to create juxtapositions in film/animation in a way that heightens his message. My favorite of the three animations is (Bedroom), just because of the way that the 'camera' (?) focuses on the different parts of the body as well as presenting it as a whole - I think this is particularly moving for me because I like the idea of the 'perfect' girl being deconstructed by the lens that we see her through.
I also find White's video for Adidas compelling because a) it's awesome and his symbols are SO interesting and b) the visual aspect of it is super enticing. I think that by placing the subject in this hyper-feminine, boy-band loving, teenybopper environment the distance that White draws between the different selves that she develops into is made even more powerful.
Anyway, watch these videos. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as I do!
